Family : Cichlidae
Origin : Brazil
Length : 8 cm - 3"
Min.length aquarium : 80 cm  - 30"
English name : Blackstripe Dwarf Cichlid
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that should be kept as a pair together with other small and peaceful fishes from South America.  The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots, and on the sides and background densely planted, because they need hiding places and they make a small territory. In the middle you should give them plenty of free swimming space.  The substrate should be dark to bring out the colours of this fish.  A regular changing of the water is necessary.

You should give them small live food like Artemia, small insect larvae or waterfleas.

Breeding is not easy.  Up to 200 eggs are laid and fertilized in a cave.  The female takes care of the fry and the male defends the territory.  After 2-3 days the eggs hatch and another 4-6 days the young are swimming free.  You should raise them with very fine infusoria and later with baby brine shrimp.
