Shield and cephalic appendages. - Ocular scale with a single terminal spine. Species of normal size, i.e. shield length often greater than 2–3 mm.
Chelipeds (P1). - Upper margin of right chela tuberculated or spinous. Outer face of left palm regularly convex.
Ambulatory legs (P2-P3). - Dorsolateral margins of P3 propodi rounded. Dactyl of P3 subequal to propodus or slightly shorter. Distal pilosity of P3 weak, similar to distal P2. Ventral margin of P3 dactyl with less than 10 spines.
Armament of telson. - Left lobe of telson with several spines disposed on posterior margin only. Right lobe with several spines.
Coloration. - Shield orange (cream background with orange specks). Ocular peduncle with spots (cream or white with orange specks). Distal antennular peduncle blue or dark blue. Distal antennal peduncle yellow-orange. Chela with brown, dark orange or red patches (palm orange/brown with darker orange patches; fingers white, with orange spots). Ambulatory legs (P2 & P3) with ring(s) and longitudinal bands.
Habitat. - Intertidal rocky shores, shallow-waters (lower shore to 73 m).
Geographic distribution. - From Udekem d'Acoz (Internet): Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, islands of the gulf of Guinea, Ascension island, all the Mediterranean Sea (commoner in the warm parts). East Atlantic.
Remarks. - Ecology, from Ukekem d'Acoz (Internet): On hard bottoms and in Posidonia meadows, from lower shore to 73 m. Most specimens in normal gastropod shells, but commonly in Vermetus shells fixed to the rocks.
This species has been often cited as Calcinus ornatus (Roux, 1830) until Holthuis (1977: 59) synonymized the two "The only Mediterranean species that I know, that regularly inhabits worm tubes, is Calcinus ornatus (Roux, 1830), so that the name Calcinus tubularis (L., 1767) should be used for that species".
