Description

Dry Szamorodni is a true rarity from the Tokaj region, made by a just a small number of producers, but it is one that Szilvia Karádi and Zsolt Berger, who own the coolest winery in Erdőbénye, firmly believe in. The word Szamorodni originates from Polish and means ‘as it comes’ and refers to grape bunches being picked comprising both very ripe regular grapes and botrytised berries. The mix of grapes are then briefly macerated on the skins, and then aged in 220-litre oak barrels for three years. For part of that time, the wine is aged under a flor (a film of yeast) which comes and goes. The flor helps retain freshness as the wine develops complex mature notes. Intense walnut, hazelnut, tobacco ginger, apricot aromas and flavours with zesty, citrusy freshness on the full-bodied and dense palate. Dry Szamorodni is often compared to dry Fino sherry, although the acidity is completely different and much higher with the dry szamorodni, with the lesser-known and similarly structured Vin jaune wines of the Jura in France is a better comparison. Great by itself or as a digestif.
