VEGETATIVE FEATURES

Thallus habit: erect, bushy attached by a crustose basal disc. Size: 2-5cm high. Branching: dichotomous (A). Intergenicula: cylindrical, slightly widened and compressed towards distal apices (tapered) (B); 0.5 (0.1)mm long, 0.1(0.2)mm in diameter. Genicula: cells 110-130µm long. Colour of living specimen: from pink to white. Colour of dried specimen: from white to yellow.

Medulla: cells 110-140µm long. Cortex: cells 17-25µm long. Epithallial cells: elongated, polygonal, epithallial shallow concavities: 15-28µm long x 5-12µm in diameter. Cell connections: cell fusions. Other features: trichocytes J-type (C).

Conceptacles: terminal, pedunculate, lighter than surrounding surface. Gametangial conceptacles: spermatangial fusiform; carpogonial shorter and thicker, urn-shaped, with a short prolonged extension and two or more short lateral projections (horn-like); diameter up to 350µm. Tetra/bisporangial conceptacles: uniporate, 360-500µm in outside diameter; 200-350µm in diameter x 250-300µm high. Phenology: from May to September.

Habitat: epiphytic particularly on Cladostephus, Halopitys, Stipocaulon, Phyllophora, Cystoseira species etc..., recorded on both exposed and sheltered rocks and pools. Bathymetric distribution: sublittoral; from shallows to 30m deep (rare). Geographic distribution (Babbini & Bressan 1997):
