Leaves ovate-oblong to oblong-elliptic. Sometimes shallowly cordate, widely crenate-toothed, glabrous above, pubescent beneath, 4- 10cm long at flowering time, larger later. Flowers 5- 7cm long and 5cm across, with six wine-purple petal lobes and a yellow tube, on stems to 25cm high, early summer. Western China and perhaps Assam (Kingdon-Ward 8234), in damp stony grassland and alpine pastures at around 4000m. A handsome species but difficult to please.
