Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor is common superficial fungal infection seen worldwide, caused by the lipophilic yeast Malassezia furfur. Skin scrapings show spherical or oval, thick-walled yeast-like cells (~3 to 8 µm in diameter) and short, infrequently branched hyphae often arranged end to end producing a "spaghetti and meatball" appearance.
