Scientific Description:

Tuberculate-hispid biennial or perennial; stems spreading or erect, 15−40 cm. Leaves lanceolate to elliptic, 30−70 × 5−15 mm, ± deeply undulate-dentate. Indumentum dimorphic, with short soft and longer stiff tuberculate hairs. Inflorescence elongating considerably in fruit; bracts small, ovate-lanceolate. Calyx 5−10 mm in flower, accrescent to 15(−20) mm in fruit, divided to 1/2 into broad obtuse to ± acute lobes. Corolla violet to deep purple, rarely white, tube 6−10 mm, lobes 2−3 mm. Stamens usually inserted at about middle of tube and not overlapping scales. Nutlets c. 2 × 3−4 mm, obliquely ovoid.

 

Flowering time: March−May (−July).

Habitat: Pinus brutia Ten. forest, sand dunes, waste places, etc., s.l.−900 m.

Public Description:

Anchusa undulata subsp. hybrida, known as “tatlıbaba” (in Turkish), distributed in Mediterranean basin, except Spain. It is a biennial or perennial plant with purple flowers, wrinkled leaves, stems up to 50 cm.

Flowering plants in spring can be seen in red pine forests, dune fields and waste places at elevations below 1000 m.
