Scientific Description:

Perennial. Stems 2070(125) cm, usually branched above, diameter ranging from 26 mm at base to 12 mm above, leafy throughout. Radical leaves 312 cm, pinnatisect, lobes narrowly linear with revolute margin; median cauline leaves decurrent, pinnatisect, 1.57 cm; uppermost leaves entire, linear (225 × 12 mm), longer ones decurrent. Stem and leaf indumentum as in Jurinea consanguinea. Capitula usually many (515), borne on (l)520 cm branchlets. Involucre subglobose, 15 × 1020 mm; phyllaries 6−7-seriate, (90−)100−130; outer 2−4 × 1 mm, median 4−7 × 1 mm, herbaceous, arachnoid, with glabrous, black, reflexed to erect tips; inner 10−12 × 1−2 mm, glabrous, spinescent and erect. Flowers purple. Achenes smooth to longitudinally striate, 3 mm. Pappus hairs barbellate.

 

Flowering time: June−August.

Habitat: Woods, steppe, fields and slopes, 50−1450 m.

Public Description:

Jurinea pontica is a endemic species to Türkiye and known as “kavotu” in Turkish. It is a perennial herb with purple flowers, and grows up to 125 cm in length. It blooms between June and August and is found in woods, steppe, fields and slopes.
