잔디밭이나 논둑에서 자란다. 높이 10∼40cm이다. 뿌리는 짧고 약간 굵으며 줄기는 곧게 선다. 뿌리에 달린 잎은 길이 5∼20cm, 나비 3∼10mm이고 주맥이 들어가며 밑부분이 짧은 잎집으로 된다. 줄기에 달린 잎은 바소꼴로서 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃대는 줄기 하나가 곧게 서며 길이 5∼15cm이다.
꽃은 5∼8월에 연한 붉은색 또는 흰색으로 피고 나선 모양으로 꼬인 수상꽃차례에 한쪽 옆으로 달린다. 포는 달걀 모양 바소꼴로서 길이 4∼8mm이고 끝이 뾰족하다. 꽃받침조각은 바소꼴이고 길이 4∼6mm로서 점점 좁아진다. 꽃잎은 꽃받침보다 약간 짧으며 위꽃받침잎과 함께 투구 모양을 이룬다. 입술꽃잎은 달걀을 거꾸로 세워놓은 모양으로서 꽃받침보다 길고 끝이 뒤로 젖혀지며 가장자리에 잔톱니가 난다.
씨방은 대가 없고 열매는 삭과로서 곧게 서고 타원 모양이며 길이 6∼7mm이다.
약용
근, 또는 전초를 반룡삼(盤龍蔘)이라 하며 약용한다. 개화기에 채취하여 햇볕에 건조한다.
① 약효: 益陰(익음), 淸熱(청열), 潤肺(윤폐), 止咳(지해)의 효능이 있다. 병후허약, 陰虛(음허)에 의한 內熱(내열), 咳嗽(해수)로 인한 吐血(토혈), 眩暈(현운), 腰部酸痛(요부산통), 遺精(유정), 淋濁帶下(임탁대하), 瘡瘍癰腫(창양옹종), 虛熱(허열)에 의한 口渴(구갈), 폐결핵에 의한 咳血(해혈)을 치료한다.
② 용법/용량: 신선한 것을 15~30g 달여서 복용한다. <외용>: 짓찧어서 환부에 塗布(도포)한다.
