Description
"That Cactus Thing" will suffice when you need to refer to this plant. An intimidating mouthful to pronounce yet so easy in the garden. This Chilean species from the Andean slopes is rock hardy here in good drainage making dense low mats with creamy flowers. Our friends and great gardeners Ned and Betty Lowry grew fantastic plants of this to about 30" across in their garden east of Seattle. This cactus grows with the Araucaria or Monkey Puzzle trees in Chile and is adapted to about 40" of rainfall per year. Still. a good gritty mix in a raised bed situation is the way to go.
