A female spike of serpentine sedge as seen at Star Flat near the Illinois River in southwestern Oregon........April 5, 2009. This species typically have male only female or male inflorescences, although both spikes may occasionally be found on the same inflorescence. (Many thanks to the late Norm Jensen who helped me find this cool species!)
