Today’s devotion is from James 1:5-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Double-minded people are UNSTABLE in ALL of their ways. Single-minded people are STABLE in ALL of their ways. Single-mindedness comes to those that wait upon the Lord until they hear His voice and until they get clear direction from the Lord. Single-minded people are led by the Word and the Spirit and not by circumstances.

A circumstance driven, opportunistic individual is like a surfer that surfs waves that are driven and tossed by the sea. They go wherever the waves are… in other words; they are not committed to anything other than what feels good, looks good or benefits them. They have no anchor; they pride themselves in their non-committal opportunistic approach to life. These people are unstable in ALL of their ways and cannot be counted upon to do anything that takes persistence, commitment and steadfastness.

A single-minded person keeps his eye on the compass and not on the waves. My compass is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit! I do not consider circumstances, I do not consider people’s opinions, including my own. I do not consider whether I can afford something or not, I do not consider if I like something or not, I do not consider whether things feel comfortable or not, I consider what God says, then I step out by faith!

When a person starts going down the road of what is more affordable, what do I like better, what is more convenient or what is more comfortable? That person is a circumstance driven individual, and that person will be unstable in all of their ways.

Single-minded believers make great leaders… they are very predictable, easy to follow; stable, and they make those around them feel secure. They are not tossed to and fro; they are not up one second, and down the next.  They wait upon the Lord, get their marching instructions, and then they stay the course until they get where they are going.

James 1:5-8 in The Passion Translation says, “If anyone longs to be wise, ask God for wisdom and he will give it! He won’t see your lack of wisdom as an opportunity to scold you over your failures but he will overwhelm your failures with his generous grace. Just make sure you ask empowered by confident faith without doubting that you will receive. For the ambivalent person believes one minute and doubts the next. Being undecided makes you become like the rough seas driven and tossed by the wind. You’re up one minute and tossed down the next.  When you are half-hearted and wavering it leaves you unstable. Can you really expect to receive anything from the Lord when you’re in that condition?”
