The ground spiders, family Gnaphosidae, hunt as they range over the soil by walking or sometimes running quite fast. Mostly small, less than 10mm long and often glossy black or brown, matching an earth color. They do not use a silk web to snare prey, but do use silk to construct their egg sac.
