Meet Justin Restivo, a Wall Street guy ready to throw himself off a Lower East Side building's rusty fire escape. He has been waiting to do this scene since six in the morning. Director, Abel Ferrara, appears in the background as he works on the rooftop across the street with his crew. Restivo points at Ferrara and tells us how proud he is to be working with him. He seems super enthused and positive for someone who has been waiting on his feet for 5 hours. But then, that's what acting is all about, right? The 4:44 team is working towards establishing several voyeuristic shots on the roof across the street. Each of these shots will show a snippet from a New Yorker’s final moments on Earth. Perhaps a family having their last dinner together, an old couple holding hands, or a young man having his last cigarette. It’s a little like Hitchock’s Rear Window, but the observer is Willem Dafoe instead of James Stewart, and he’s certainly not on a wheel chair. Naturally, the scene makes me think of what I would do during the final hours of my life, and perhaps that’s the point of it. Like many other Ferrara movies, 4:44 will make us introspective about our lives, decisions, regrets, and all those defining moments that brought us to this time and place. Inside the apartment, Dafoe, wrapped up in his navy blue robe once again, swings back and forth in his lime green, leather chair, going through the script. As the camera gets near, he gets up and joins the 4:44 crew on the roof. When we ask him what he thinks about the third day on set, he smiles and says, “Third time’s the charm.” So, does Restivo jump in the end?
