Acropora orbicularis

(Brook, 1892)

Acropora

Oken, 1815

Characters: Colonies are usually flat solid plates with well defined margins. Branchlets are short and usually conical except at the sides of colonies where they are inclined and may be only partly fused. Axial corallites are small or indistinguishable from radial corallites. Radial corallites are irregular in size, large and are not arranged in rows down the branchlets.

Colour: Uniform blue, cream or pink.

Similar Species: Acropora ocellata, which has well defined digitate branchlets and A. solitaryensis which has more divided plates and sharp-edged radial corallites. See also A. glauca, which has neatly arranged radial corallites.

Habitat: Shallow reef environments exposed to strong wave action.

Abundance: Uncommon.

Taxonomic Note: A cryptic species. Placed in synonymy with Acropora clathrata by Wallace (1999) and Wallace, Done and Muir (2012). However, this species has been studied at its type locality and many other places where the conical upgrowths of branchlet tips and high degree of fusion of basal branches make it readily separable from A. clathrata in the field and mostly in museum collections.
