Characters: Polyps are elongate and up to 250 millimetres long with almost parallel sides. They are thick and heavy and usually have a strong central arch. Most primary septa extend from the mouth to the perimeter. Costae are fine and straight. There are no attachment scars except on immature specimens. Peripheral centres are common.

Colour: Usually brown.

Similar Species: Fungia gravis. See also Cycloseris somervillei.

Habitat: Reef slopes and lagoons.

Abundance: Common.

Taxonomic Note: Called Pleuractis paumotensis by Gittenberger, Reijnen and Hoeksema (2011) from molecular data. However, this requires further study.
