This male was photographed by Dr. Dean Hendrickson in his laboratory on September 23, 2007. Nearly all of Dr. Hendrickson's lab stock is directly descended from this male, which arrived in his lab as a small adult in 1995, a gift from Gary Kratchovil. It was born in captivity in the care of Kratchovil as one of the first generation of offspring of specimens collected from Poza La Becerra by Kratchovil and Konigs (A. Konings. 1994. An extremely rare colour morph of Herichthys minckleyi. In: The Cichlids Yearbook (volume 4), edited by A. Konings, St. Leon-Rot, Germany:Cichlid Press. p. 68-69. ). All specimens held by Hendrickson are descended from the live stock donated by Kratchovil that was accessioned at IB-UNAM and loaned to Hendrickson (IB-UNAM invoice 03-95 dated Sept. 3, 1995).
