Status Söderström (1920: 248) named the type species of Microspio as Spio mecznikowianus, perhaps because he included the junior name Spio atlanticus as a synonym of Microspio mecznikowianus. However, Microspio atlantica is regarded as a valid name currently (eg Fonseca-Gonzalez et al, 2022: 342), since Hannerz (1956) re-validated it.
