Otopharynx antron (formerly known as Stigmatochromis sp."modestus eastern") is a cave living species. It can be found in the southeastern part of the lake in the rocky environments between Gome and Makanjila Point. In an aquarium it is also necessary for them that there are a lot of hiding places.

In the middle of 2016 I bought a young trio of this species, one male and two females. From these young fish the male is - in this moment (mid-2017) - about 10 cm and the females are about 9 cm.
The whole day they are hiding between the rocks in this tank, only when itīs feeding time they come out and show themselves. Up till now the male is very tolerant against his females, itīs rather the other way around, the females are hunting the male often away. Probably because of this the male is just very slowly starting to get some color. They are also very tolerant against the other inhabitants and they have also been accepted by the other fish in this tank. Despite that, it seems that these fish donīt feel really pretty in this tank in which are swimming a reasonable number of different fish so maby I have to catch them in the future and place them in another tank. The pictures of this species are not all showing a full coloured male yet, we'll put more of them on this site in the future when he's completely coloured.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with young mbunas.
In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix etc.
