Found in Texas and Mexico in chapparel and oak-pine forests on rocky slopes and canyons at elevations of 1700 to 2700 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with a subterranean pyriform-globose tuber giving rise to a single, ovate to elliptioc, green rounded base, acute to obtuse apically, narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the later summer and early fall on an erect, terminal, 6" [15 cm] long, to 90 flowered inflorescence with triangular, acute floral bracts.
