focus on... New Malagasy species
Since the 2001 Peperomia Expedition to Madagascar ten new endemic Peperomia species were described from the eastern rainforest zone of that Island. This means that one quarter of all known Malagasy Peperomias has been described as a result of the expedition.

Peperomia costata was found in the dense evergreen forests of the Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve. Peperomia humbertii grows in thick moss mats in the nearby Marojejy National Park. Peperomia mantadiana is a nice terrestrial species with verticillate leaves and mostly reddish inflorescences found at different forest sites. Peperomia pluvisilvatica is an epiphyte only seen in the rain forests of the Montagne d'Ambre National Park. This is also the type locality of another new species: Peperomia terebinthina. Peperomia ratticaudata occurs in the low altitude evergreen forests of southeastern Madagascar. Those species were described in Syst. Geogr. Pl. 73: 71-81 (2003). You have online access to the protologues and type specimen images of these new species by the TRGP
A 7th species, Peperomia nicolliae, has been published in Syst. Geogr. Pl. 73: 288-290 (2003). Three more new species were described in Syst. Geogr. Pl. 76: 221-228 (2006). Peperomia ankaranensis is a species occuring in a deciduous dry forest environment as found on the Ankarana plateau (part of the Ankarana Natural Reserve). Peperomia erythrocaulis grows terrestrial on the Marojejy east slope above 1700 m whereas Peperomia richardsonii is an epiphyte found in Ranomafana National Park.
