Description
Max length : 5.8 cm SL. Depth range 2 - 15 m.
The Capricorn Cardinalfish is dusky yellow above and brassy to golden below. It has a black spot on the caudal peduncle and bright blue lines that run from the snout through the eye. The lower line reaches the posterior margin of the operculum.
Etymology
Apogon: Greek, a = without + Greek pogon = chin, beard.
The specific name is from the Latin, capricornis, in reference to the distribution of the species.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Capricorn Group on the southern Great Barrier Reef and Chesterfield Group in the Coral Sea, and Sydney, New South Wales of Australia. Reported from New Caledonia.
Biology
Benthic species which inhabits coral reef.
Similar species
Apogon flavus (Allen & Randall, 1993) Southwest Pacific: Lord Howe and Norfolk islands and Middleton Reef in the northern Tasman Sea, Kenn Reef (Coral Sea), and at the Capricornian Group on the southern Great Barrier Reef. Not reported from New Caledonia.
