Troop 1 members honored

HONESDALE, PA — Boy Scouts of America Troop 1 has a long and rich history as one of the earliest organized troops. It appeared in 1911 and is the longest continually chartered troop in the nation.

This year, four new Eagle

Scouts add to that rich history of service.

Four Scouts from Troop 1 were honored at a ceremony in June, when Brodie Cole, Tyler Lofberg, Joseph

Harcum and Aiden LaTourette received their Eagle Scout awards.

To earn the Eagle Scout award, the Scouts must earn a required number of merit badges, hold leadership positions within the troop, and complete an Eagle Scout project. That involves planning, preparing and leading other Scouts during the project’s final phases.

Finally, they must pass a district review board.

Less than five percent of all Scouts earn the Eagle rank, and it is rare for more than one or two to come from a single troop in any one year.

For their Eagle Scout service projects, Brodie Cole built a sharing library at the Wayne County Public Library  in Honesdale, Tyler Lofberg built a mobile training structure to be used for Fire Department training, Joseph Harcum built swallow bird houses to help increase swallow populations, and Aiden LaTourette built memorial benches for gardens outside of Lakeside Elementary School in Honesdale.

Troop 1 has even more to be proud of this year. Four of its Scouts will head into the Armed Forces. Eagle Scout Tyler Lofberg recently graduated from Wallenpaupack High School and he has been appointed and committed to West Point Military Academy as a cadet.

Brodie Cole, Joseph Harcum and Bradley Rotundo are recent graduates from Honesdale High School.

Cole will enter the Pennsylvania National Guard, while Harcum and Rotunda will be serving in the United States Navy.
