Danafungia horrida (Dana, 1846)

The large and rough septal spines help identify this species, although it is possible that some or all of our specimens may be the similar Danafungia scruposa. All our photos below were taken on the Kwajalein Atoll seaward reef.

This species can also generate its own orange color. See Cycloseris sp. 6 for an explanation.

Only the two on the left are Danafungia horrida.

Like the other Fungiids, D. horrida is also susceptible to bleaching from warm water or too much shade.
