Ocorre desde a América Central até o sul do Brasil em águas costeiras da plataforma continental, geralmente sobre fundos de areia ou areia e lama. Atinge 20 cm de comprimento (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980). Alimenta-se de peixes e invertebrados bentônicos (camarões) (Soares et al., 2008).

Morphology:
Shape: discoidal. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: entire (83%), sinuate to entire (16%), lobed to sinuate (2%). Ventral edge: entire (78%), sinuate to entire (19%), lobed to sinuate (3%). Profile: biconvex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position supramedian, orientation horizontal, opening pseudo-ostial (94%), para-ostial (6%), morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium lateral, cauda bent tubular.
