Bon Jovi – ‘Shot Through The Heart: Live in Cleveland, OH – March 17, 1984’ (Bootleg) – Album Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

Bon Jovi the touring act was extremely fresh and new as the band hadn’t been together for very long. Even Jon said the band was terrible until their third album when things started to click. While out crate digging years and years ago, I found a Bon Jovi bootleg of a radio broadcast from only 2 months after their debut album, ‘Bon Jovi’, was released. A great snapshot of the young band in all its rawness and newness.

The show takes place on March 17th, 1984 at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, OH. The show was broadcast on WMMS-FM Radio so of course we get some of the radio DJs on here during the show. The bootleg I have was released in 2015 and 2 LPs (both black) and it was limited to only 500 copies. The cover is pure Bon Jovi with the denim blue jeans with a picture of Jon on the front and the band on the back. I mean, it is Jon’s band don’t forget. The band plays all but “Burning for Love” from the debut and you get a Sly & The Family Stone cover. Let’s get to the music.

The album opens with a Radio DJ introducing the band and they come out slowly with a very long drawn out build which you mostly hear the crowd screaming. Some weird distorted voice says something and then the guitar kicks in and we get the opening to “Breakout”. There is no doubt it is live as it is rough, raw and not very tight. Jon actually sounds pretty decent, still a little unpolished, but he can still hit some high notes that he can’t now. And he should be able to hit them since he is only about 22 or so here. Richie lays down a great solo and things start getting better as the band jams it up a little here.

They immediately go in to “Come Back” and this one seems to sound better. The band feels more comfortable with this one. The backing vocals are better and all around seems a little tighter than the opener. At the end Jon talks up the crowd with pure confidence and even brings up the fact that Cleveland Rocks. He introduces “Roulette” and Richie lays in to the riff and with a short countdown, the band goes full on. A tough one for Jon to sing as he was trying to hard, but if you were in the crowd, I am sure you didn’t care.

The radio DJ comes in again and introduces and interviews Jon real quick bringing up the fact they are from New Jersey. They also bring up that Roy Bittan worked on the album and they promote that evenings show. They then rock out to “She Don’t Know Me” but not before doing a little jam first. I can’t hear the keyboards very well and Richie’s guitar work is a little suspect at first as it was hard to tell what the song was. Backing vocals are a little rough while Jon sounds better this time. Not a very consistent band yet. “Shot Through the Heart” is up next and has that same serious tone. The keyboards are prominent here and all sounds great as the band nails this one and completely rocks out. Jon sounds really good as he sings this one in a lower register so no straining to hit those high notes.

Jon converses with the crowd and already has a swagger and confidence. The band cues up “Love Lies” and honestly I couldn’t tell what the song was from the opening notes, plus some different piano opening as well. It is nice to see them change things up and don’t just deliver the song as was on the album. Then you get to the familiar notes and all is right with the world. They completely bring this one home and deliver the goods as Jon sounds great again and the band is fully invested as well with Richie rocking it on the guitar. DJ interrupts again and promotes the debut album and their show. He talks about the outfit Jon is wearing and then they introduce the band (David Bryan as David Rashbaum). As he introduces Richie, he hits a note and then goes in to a wicked solo before going in to “Get Ready” and with an opening like that I like it better than the album version. The band seems rejuvenated after that solo. Jon stops during the song and addresses the audience and gets them to singalong.

Then you hear the keyboards come in with that all too familiar keyboard line and you know “Runaway” is up next and the band explodes with a fury and although it is a little messy, it is still killer. Live is messy and that is what is great about a live show. They end the show bombastically and the DJ comes out and gets them back out for another tune which is the Sly & The Family Stone cover of “I Wanna Take You Higher”. The band get s a little funky, but they rock it out at the same time. A fun and crazy closer. They do a great job wrapping up the show. But then the DJ comes on and does his closing comments rather quickly I might add and that is all.

All-in-all, the sound was really great on this show. But being a radio broadcast it is no surprise. The show was short, but the band only has one album at this point. It is a great timepiece of a band that was just starting out and was still fresh and raw. Although Jon already had the confidence of a front man, the band wasn’t quite as polished as he was. That would change. My Overall Score is a 4.5 out of 5.0 Stars as it ain’t perfect, but it ain’t bad either.

  1. I guess for Shot Through the Heart, they didn’t do the “Bang Bang” intro? It’s on a 12″ single.

I would really like this one. I don’t have any of these songs live except Runaway. This is a real treasure of an era Jon seems to loathe, but I love.

    1. I don’t remember that so I will say no they didn’t do it. If you find it, grab it. A nice piece of history for them that does not get the love it deserves. Why Jon hates it is beyond me.

  2. Nice find John. I guess this was them playing wherever and whenever and getting them chops down. I need to get a copy of the debut on vinyl at some point.
    Great stuff dude

  3. That’s a nice score. Radio broadcasts are usually great bootleg material, and I always love the early stuff the best, I love hearing how bands were in the formative years. It’s pretty cool that the band wasn’t really in form yet but could still pull off a show worth checking out.
