What Is Grappling And Why Is It Important?

Grappling is a hand-to-hand combat skill taught here at Absolute MMA in West Jordan, Utah. Combat arts that rely on gripping or grabbing an opponent to hold an opponent in a dominant position or submit an attacker can be considered styles that use grappling. The art of grappling is evident in different Martial Arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling

Not all Martial Arts that can be categorized as Grappling allow striking techniques in practice or competition. One thing all grappling arts have in common is the teaching of how to take an opponent to the ground and maintain control. Arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teach submissions such as chokes and armbars whereas Wrestling focuses on pinning an opponent once the fight is taken to the ground.

Why is Grappling important?

Grappling is a key skill for any Martial Artist to develop. It teaches you a variety of skills such as:

  • Avoiding takedowns
  • How to take a fight to the ground
  • How to submit an opponent with chokes and joint locks
  • How to escape an attacker’s submission attempt
  • Reversals or sweeps to get to a more dominant position

You don’t want to be taken to the ground and not know what to do. At Absolute MMA, we teach you how to use technique and leverage to win fights and protect yourself in difficult situations such as self-defense scenarios and organized competitions. Grappling will teach you how to move your body and increase your self-confidence.
