Atlantic saury (Scomberesox saurus)

Fish of the Scomberesox genus of the Scomberesocidae (sauries) family of the Scomberesocoidea superfamily of the Belonoidei suborder of the Beloniformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Atlantic saury (Scomberesox saurus) was first described in 1792 by the German physician, naturalist and zoologist Johann Julius Walbaum (1724-1799).

It is a pelagic schooling species. It swims near the surface, usually no deeper than 30 meters. Sometimes, it comes close to the shore. The maximum recorded length is 50 cm; specimens up to 32 cm long are more common. It feeds on zooplankton, fry and fish eggs.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
