A Quick One Skillet Dinner: Healthy Steak Tips with Peppers and Onions

If you have been following along for a little while, you probably can tell that I am a fan of quick and easy meals. Sure, sometimes I do not mind spending a little extra time in the kitchen, but I absolutely love creating quick one skillet recipes that take thirty minutes to make from start to finish.

Just for fun, here are a few of my favorite one-skillet wonders to add your menu:

These beef tips with peppers and onions recipe is going to be another delicious recipe that I can add to my list of one-skillet favorites and I am pretty positive that you will love it, too.

Watch How to Make This Recipe

This recipe has it all – tender steak, lots of garlic, onion, crisp bell peppers, and mushrooms. It’s one of those hearty, satisfying, stick to your ribs meals that will not take you any time at all to make but is such a crowd pleaser at the same time.

Not only is delicious this recipe is also Whole30 compliant, Paleo friendly, low carb, and naturally gluten free.

The Ingredients You’ll Need to Make This Recipe

One of the things I think you’ll love about this recipe is how easy it is to customize based on what ingredients you may already have on hand. You can easily switch up the color of the peppers, the type of onion you use, or even the protein you choose (although I highly recommend steak).

Steak: For this recipe I like to use sirloin steak or any piece that has good marbling throughout. If your grocery store does not have sirloin available at the time, tell your butcher what you are planning to do with the meat and ask for their suggestions. They will usually be able to help you choose a cut of steak that will work well for this recipe.

Bell Peppers: You can really use whatever bell peppers you prefer for this one skillet dish. I went with orange and green but feel free to use any combination of your favorite colors.

Mushrooms: Steak and mushrooms go together like peanut butter and jelly, so it only makes sense to throw a few in this skillet. If you just cannot stand the thought of mushrooms (I know some people just are not a fan) feel free to leave them out.

Onion: Half a yellow onion should do the trick for this dish. Of course, just as with the bell peppers, feel free to switch things up and use a white or red onion if that is all you have available.

Garlic: It would not be a steak recipe with a few cloves of fresh garlic. I know it can be a pain to mince, but fresh garlic really is the best option for maximum flavor.

Apple Cider Vinegar: In this recipe, the apple cider vinegar works to deglaze the pan to make sure you get all those lovely flavorful brown bits.

Fun Flavor Variations

Not only are the ingredients for this recipe customizable, there are also some fun ways to switch up the flavor in this dish.

  • Asian Inspired Beef Tips: add in coconut aminos, sesame oil, and fresh ginger to create an Asian flavored beef tip skillet.
  • Taco Flavored Beef Tips: season the beef with ground cumin, chili powder, paprika, oregano, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice for a flavorful twist

How to Cook Perfect Steak Tips with Onions and Peppers?

raw steak seasoned with salt and pepper

Step 1: First, start by prepping the sirloin steak. Cut the steak into small bite sized pieces and then add to a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and stir until the beef is well coated in the seasoning.

Step 2: Next, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, you can add in your cooking fat. For this particular recipe I prefer to use ghee or avocado oil.

If you have never used ghee before, it has the flavor of butter but the dairy proteins have been removed. It can be a great option if you do not like to use dairy.

Add the steak bites to the skillet cook for 3-5 minutes until browned on all sides. Then, remove the pan and set aside.

Step 3: Once the beef has been removed from the pan, add the apple cider vinegar to the skillet to deglaze the pan. Then, add the minced garlic, onion, and diced peppers. Cook the veggies for 10-12 more minutes until the sliced onion is translucent and the bell peppers are tender yet crisp.

Step 4: Finally, it’s time to finish off the dish by adding the steak and their juices back to the skillet. When the beef is back in the pan, give everything a good stir until well combined and cook for 2-3 more minutes until the steak is hot.

Once everything is good and hot, you can remove the skillet from the heat and garnish with fresh sliced green onion before serving.

How to Serve Your Steak and Veggies

My favorite way to serve these beef tips is with a fresh salad and mashed potatoes or mashed cauliflower. A few other great options are roasted veggies, cauliflower rice, or roasted potatoes!

  2. I just made this and it is super easy and delicious! I got just a little heavy handed on the fresh minced garlic and the mushrooms, cause I like them LOL, added some green peppers just for more color, and used filet mignon. I was worried that this would not have enough seasoning or flavor, but WOW, the flavor is perfect! I will definitely be making this many many more times!
