Pink quill, Wallisia cyanea, is a species of flowering plant in the bromeliad family, native to the rainforests of Ecuador. An epiphytic perennial growing to 50 cm high by 50 cm wide, it has stemless rosettes of thin, recurved leaves and paddle-shaped spikes of 20 pink bracts with violet flowers, in spring and autumn. Pink Quill plants that don't bloom aren't getting enough light. Move your plant closer to a window, but out of hot, direct midday sun.  This is the only bromeliad from the Tillandsia genus that can be grown in a pot. It prefers a loose, fine-grade fir bark mix, such as an orchid mix or one specially labeled for bromeliads. Don't pack it down; keep the mix loose to allow air around the roots.  Spray with water until leaves are thoroughly wet, 2-3 times a week. The water that runs off should be enough to wet the roots. Do not soak base of the plant, which can cause the flower stem to rot. Use rainwater or filtered tap water for misting your bromeliad. Soft water contains too much salt and some tap water contains chlorine and fluoride that can leave water spots on foliage.
