The Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to welcome Dr. Hannah Wunsch as the new vice chair for research and director of outcomes research. Dr. Wunsch was recruited to Weill Cornell Medicine as a professor of anesthesiology and will practice as a member of the anesthesiology critical care division.
In her role as vice chair for research, Dr. Wunsch will work with the executive vice chair for academic affairs to lead and further develop externally funded research and mentor young investigators in the department. As director of outcomes research, she will bring her considerable experience in data-driven clinical and critical care outcomes research to further expand our efforts in those areas, working in collaboration with researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine and internationally.
She joins us from the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Hospital and was a professor in the Department of Anesthesia and the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care at the University of Toronto where she was the associate director of critical care research and held a Canada Research Chair.
Dr. Wunsch received her BA in biology from Harvard University, MD from Washington University in St. Louis, and MSc in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She completed a residency in anesthesiology and fellowship in critical care medicine at Columbia University as an Apgar Scholar.
Her research focuses on the organization and management of critical care services, with a particular focus on international comparisons of critical care, use of large databases to understand resource utilization, and long-term outcomes of critically ill patients. She is the author of the recent book, The Autumn Ghost: How the Battle Against a Polio Epidemic Revolutionized Modern Medical Care.
