We had our morning free which thankfully allowed me to get caught up and post yesterday’s blog.
The opulent Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a true sense of the region’s history through the European Renaissance. It even contains the world’s largest ceiling fresco by Tiepolo.
“This incredibly lavish 18th-century palace was created under the auspices of two Schönborn prince-bishops, Lothar Franz and Friedrich Carl, who brought enormous knowledge and passion, as well as a budget for the best, to the project. Over the course of 60 years, they fostered the creation of a 300-room palace that contains jaw-dropping baroque art. The magnificent grand staircase boasts the world’s largest ceiling fresco, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Portions of the building were damaged by Allied bombing in 1945, but, fortunately, most of the historic furnishings had been stored off-site and key rooms were unharmed, so you can see the original—and matchless—artwork, gilding and statuary. Check out both the spectacular Hall of Mirrors and the imposing Imperial Hall, which boasts a large oval dome and 20 half-columns. Even the gardens have been restored, right down to the topiary fruit trees in the kitchen garden, which are re-creations of the trees grown there in the 18th century.”
After our visit to the Residence, we had about fifteen minutes left to take a very quick look at the carefully restored gardens.
A short walking tour brought us to the cathedral where we opted to depart from the group and visit the inside of the church. There was a service of some sort going on, so we only took a few minutes to observe from the back.
Upon leaving, I spotted a frozen yogurt shop, and thankfully was able to convince the others that we “needed” to get some 🤪
By now were only a couple blocks away from the scenic bridge which we had been instructed to cross and from there we would be able to spot our bus for our return to the ship at 4:00p.m.
Happy hour at 6:00, port talk at 6:45, dinner at 7:00. We are just starting to get the rhythm down now that we only have a couple of days remaining on board.
Why, when you are really looking forward to something does it always seem to take forever. But then when it finally gets here, time flies by??
GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I’m grateful for the opportunity we had to visit this spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site.
We most sincerely appreciate it when you “like”, “share”, “comment”, “subscribe”, and/or invite your friends to follow along.
Great post..I must say tho, the original occupants’ drive for overwhelming opulence in their residences across Europe in that era is somewhat confounding.

Yes, some of the places (homes) we have been fortunate to have visited over the years are “beyond, beyond”. Beautiful to see, but a world apart from everyone else who lived at that time in the area.

I have not heard any negative comments about any food reactions from Tim! Has he found respite, or is he just getting better at knowing the what, when, and where of food and travel?

John, he has done quite well (most of the time) on this trip. We did speak to the dining room staff at our first meal and they have been quite helpful at advising Tim which dishes would be safe for him and which he might want to avoid.

My father was born in Wurzburg, and grew up in a cute town nearby called Gemunden. It is really charming. If you can check it out.

Hi Penny! Unfortunately we will not have enough time to get to Gemunden. What a lovely area though.

Hello,
I’m following up on an travel log email you sent Alice.
She had several falls resulting in breaking several ribs. Her health has severely declined and is in a care facility.
Other sad news, Rod passed away the first part of March after a lengthy illness.

Thank you for your kind response. We are deeply saddened to learn that Alice’s health has declined and hear that Rod has passed away. We met them on a cruise to Hawaii in 2016 and deeply enjoyed their company at several shared dinners, both on board and upon our return to the San Fernando Valley. We would sincerely appreciate it if you would pass on our condolences to Alice and let her know that she holds a special place in our hearts.
