5. How good is the Extreme Cold Weather Gear?

ECW is awesome!   You have, and wear, much of the same gear in Minnesota.  The only thing they gave me here that I have not worn before and love is my “big red.”  I put it on in the morning over my normal work clothes and I am warm enough to make it to the dining hall for breakfast.  If I add warm clothes under it, a pair of snowpants, goggles and something to protect my face, I can spend a longer time in the cold.

This is what I am required to wear when I leave base.  It was warm that day so my balaclava is in my pocket. 

I found the Canada Goose website and this expedition coat was initially made for scientists working at McMurdo station.  It is 625 fill power white duck down. 

The bunny boots are also warm, although I have not put them on since this photo was taken.  They are temperature rated down to negative 20F.  They are all rubber with insulation between two layers.  This allows them to get wet and stay warm.  Between the rubber is 3 layers of 1/4 inch wool.  When I fly with the boots, there is a valve on the side that opens to release pressure. 

I will let you all know how warm this stuff is after I camp outside overnight for “Happy Camper” School.
