Hi Luc. I saw this down near Careyes, about two hrs south of PV. I did try the fruit, seemed ok to me. Didn’t eat a lot but I didn’t get any of the telltale signs of toxicity. I did, however, get stung by a scorpion the next day.

Ha , ha , the revenge of the red fruit !!!
Didn’t you ask a local old timer about this fruit ?
How was the seed , if it looked like an acerola i’ll take a wild guess : Malpighia mexicana ???
You should have send me some seeds , you know I am into preservation of wild / rare species.
How is this project going in Careyes ( fruit nursery ?? )

    Take care.

    Luc

I asked some of the guys I was working with and none of them recognized it. I just checked out some photos of M. mexicana, it seems to have three lobed leaves and a smooth fruit. I guess it could be some subspecies. I should be down that way again sometime soon and I will definitely get some seed or seedlings to you. It would also be great to come by your nursery again. Project down there is going well. All of the plant material we got from you is in the ground for this rainy season.

Thanks for visiting and for the comment. The fruit and flower look very similar to Acerola – Malpighia glabra (Malpighiaceae) but its slightly different. Acerola is extremely high in Vitamin C as I’m sure this is too.

Say something...
