Hypselecara temporalis can reach a maximum length of about 25 centimeters. Hypselecara temporalis has different colors, the main color is orange-pink, the basic color is mustard yellow to olive green. The fins sometimes have a blue glow, the eyes are orange-rimmed. The black band with the spot in the middle is not always clearly visible. They have two common names Chocolate cichlid or Emerald cichlid.

Hypselecara temporalis are fairly peaceful fish that can easily be kept together with other cichlids, leaving other inhabitants alone. For example, they go well with the Uaru amphiacanthoides or Uaru fernandezyepezi, the Heros severus, Discus fish and Angelfish. They can only become somewhat aggressive during the mating season.

The Aquarium

Hypselecara temporalis requires an aquarium of at least 2 meters. Furnish the aquarium with dense hard plants, floating plants, stones and driftwood so that there are sufficient hiding places. They may sometimes eat the plants. A few flat and slanted stones should not be missing. With dim lighting, the colors of the fish come out better. They are very demanding on water parameters, so good filtration and regular water changes are recommended.

Diet

Strong live food or frozen food such as pieces of beef heart, mussels, shrimps, earthworms, mosquito larvae and krill should be given as food. Vegetable food should also not be missed, supplementing dry food. Provide sufficient variety.

Breeding Hypselecara temporalis

Breeding of Hypselecara temporalis is quite simple, 400 to 800 eggs are laid on a flat stone and fertilized. After 3 days the eggs hatch and the young are placed in breeding pits.

After 6 days the fry swim around freely and can be raised with brine shrimp nauplii. As the young grow older you can switch to larger food.
