Expiation by Octave Thanet (pseudonym of Alice French, 1850-1934).
British "yellowback" edition of an American novel which deals with social conditions in the Black River region of Arkansas in the waning days of the Civil War as the residents were being harassed by a marauding band of swamp-dwelling "grayback" guerrillas. It was originally published as a four-part serial in Scribner's Magazine (January to April 1890).
