Japanese lens maker frustrated despite record profit

TOKYO -- Japanese lens maker Hoya expects another banner year for the year through March, supported by strong earnings from high-definition photomasks for liquid crystal panels. Also helping are robust European sales of bifocals and other high value-added lenses, another key earnings source for the company.

Hiroshi Suzuki, president and CEO of Hoya, wants to expand the medical division through takeovers.

     Hoya said on Jan. 29 its expects net profit to rise 0.2% on the year to 93 billion yen ($813 million) for the year through March 2016, for the second straight record profit. The company has weathered the global economic slowdown by focusing more on its higher-profit businesses.
