Hi, I'm Andrew and I’m just a simple zoology student and crustacean researcher from Ohio. This blog centers around animal IDs so feel free to send me any unknown species (and its location) that you have and I will take my best shot at IDing it! I also occasionally post random zoology/animal factoid things.

Disclamer: none of the pictures are mine unless stated

Japanese Sea Lily (Metacrinus rotundus)

…A species of stalked crinoid (a type of echinoderm) found off the western coast of Japan. Like other sea lilies the Japanese sea lily is a suspension feeder and uses its many arms, which are laced with tube feet, to catch passing food items and move them into its mouth. In addition the Japanese sea lily has a calcareous stalk that allows it to reach out farther in the water column. If damaged the Japanese sea lily can regrow most of its body parts, it even can regrow its crown if it is broken off the stalk.
