Megalaima haemacephala lives alone or in small groups. It seems to like to bask in the morning on the branches of tall bare trees, often hovering to sit next to each other. The flight is straight, with a fast flap.

These birds feed on banyan, peepul, and other wild figs, various drups and berries, and the occasional insect.

Mating Habits

Courtship involves singing, throat puffing, head nodding, tail flicking, ritual eating and allopreening. Breeds all year round with local variations. The breeding season is mainly February to April in India and December to September in Sri Lanka. Both male and female individuals dig nests at the bottom of the narrow horizontal branches, and also perch in the nest holes. The female lays three or four eggs. Both parents incubate. The incubation period is not well known, but is thought to be around two weeks.
