Mary Lawrence
Mary Lawrence was a 2016 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 2nd Congressional District of Minnesota. Lawrence withdrew in January 2016. In her withdrawal announcement, she stated, "At this juncture, it is clear that I would not win the [Democratic Farmer-Labor Party] DFL endorsement through the caucus process. While I wholeheartedly believe that I could win the Primary, and go on to win the General, this pursuit would deeply divide and harm our party. That is something that I cannot do in good conscience."[1][2]
Biography
Lawrence attended Mount Holyoke College. She is an ophthalmologist and has volunteered in Kenya as a medical student and Nepal as an eye surgeon. After a year in private practice, she joined the ophthalmology faculty at Harvard Medical School, where she received the Teacher of the Year Award. After moving to Minnesota, Lawrence became a member of the ophthalmology faculty at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1997. She also worked at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. In 2010, she was appointed to serve as the VA’s highest ranking ophthalmologist and as the Deputy Executive Director at the Department of Defense/Veterans Affairs Vision Center of Excellence.[3]
Lawrence and her husband, Jim, have three sons.[3]
Elections
2016
Lawrence ran in the 2016 election for the U.S. House to represent Minnesota's 2nd District. She withdrew in January 2016 after it became clear she would not receive the endorsement of the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party, an endorsement that is often key to the Democratic candidate in Minnesota.[1][2]
