Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Naturtrüb

Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Naturtrüb 1

Commercial Description

Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Naturtrüb is the most popular variant in the classic Schöfferhofer range. It still has a little yeast in the bottle and the increased addition of hops it tastes a bit bitter, at the same time very fresh and fruity-spicy. And visually, the naturally cloudy Hefeweizen has much to offer. It shimmers amber in the glass and is therefore visually a pleasure.

Enjoy the special sparkle – with Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Naturtrüb!

Review

Named after the house of printing revolutionary Peter Schöffer, where a brewery was later founded (Mainzer Schöfferhof). This brewery, located in Mainz, now goes by the name “Brauerei Dreikönigshof”, with Schöfferhofer now being the fourth best selling Wheat Beer on the German market, after being released in 1978. A portrait of Peter Schöffer can be found on the bottles, thus carrying on his legacy.

Fun fact: This was the first Wheat Beer to be brewed outside of Bavaria, and set a trend for alternative tasting Wheat Beers.

The pour deserves some sort of congratulations, or perhaps something like a medal or a trophy, because this Hefeweizen pours exactly as the commercial pictures appearance. A nice cloudy golden-yellow body supports a creamy large white head, rising past the rim, standing strong and not leaking down the side of the glass. However after a couple of minutes it did dissipate to around one third of the size.

Yet it had consistency and remained a fixture on the Beer until the final sips, leaving a mediocre patched lacing down the walls of the glass.

The aroma has noticeable yeast esters, providing a strong citrus zest, in addition to black pepper cloves. There are no banana aromas which are typical of the classic Bavarian style, setting it apart as an urban alternative. The taste is pale and floral, with a spiced orange/lemon zest, in addition to a general wheat flavour, providing a honey biscuit like taste. The finish is bitter, ending with a rich, fresh, yeasty sourness. The texture is creamy, and the mouthfeel is delicate, with a soft, medium carbonation.

All in all, Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Naturtrüb is an interesting alternative option to your classic Bavarian take on the style. It is far more particular as it isn’t as sweet as the Bavarian style, it is actually more sour, citrusy and bitter. The presentation is excellent, and the mouthfeel is very desirable, pouring with a superiority in comparison to many other commercial Wheat Beers. Perhaps this Wheat Beer isn’t for you, but in terms of what the beer is trying to be, it has to score high.

Malts

Pale Malts *educated guess*

Typically, these types of malts will provide a grainy, biscuit like, honey taste, but will vary slightly depending on which variety is used. For example, English Pale tends to be darker and stronger in flavour in comparison to American 2-Row Pale. There is also one called German Acidulated Malt which is produced by developing the lactic acid bacteria that occurs naturally on all the grains.

Wheat Malt

A lot more difficult to work with in comparison to barley, very sticky, but many are fans of the result, being the second most popular malt. With a high protein content, it is very useful if looking for a thicker, longer lasting head. It also provides the flavour of bread coupled with a subtle touch of acidity.

Hops

*The hops for this Beer are not listed, but we can always take a guess using our somewhat pretentious, and blatant superior knowledge*

Tettnanger

One of the four noble hops, Tettnanger originates from the German village of Tettnang, which is also another name for the hop which now sees different variants all over the world. With a soft spice, this hop also features a delicate, balanced aroma of flowers and herbs. With a low alpha acid composition of 3%-5.8%, this hop is well suited to European Lagers and Pilsners. It is also welcomed in a wide array of styles including Bitters, Wheat Beers, American Lagers and also a broad variety of European and American styled Ales. Spault, Fuggles, and Santiam hops are all good alternatives to Tettnanger.

Hallertau

This hop (also know as Hallertauer Mittelfrüher, or simply Hallertauer), originating in Germany and dating back to the late 19th century, is one of the four noble hops and has a light flowery and spicy aroma along with an alpha acid composition of just 3.5%. Characteristics can vary depending on where the hops are sourced, as they are also very popular in the US and New Zealand. Belgian style Ales, Lagers, and Bocks, as well as Wheat Beers are all styles which could utilise this hop.

    1. Hi Adrian, I agree, this Beer is bangin’! I actually think it is ever so slightly better than Franziskaner. The review for Franziskaner can also be found if you go into the “Beer” menu page.
