It is also called Cuban holly because of its unusual elongated leaves with wavy edges, but its leaves are not its only decorative feature, as it can also produce pretty white flowers. In its country of origin, Cuba, this pretty begonia is also used for medicinal purposes, as it is said to have detoxifying and laxative effects. Kept as an indoor or terrarium plant, it prefers warm, humid locations.

Ben's tips on plant care:
- Habitat/Light requirements: Part shade to light, without direct sunlight.
- Substrate: Green plant soil, mineral, ensure good drainage
- Temperature: optimum at 24-30° C
- Watering: water as soon as the upper substrate layers begin to dry, but avoid waterlogging at all costs, ideally water with lukewarm, low-calcium rainwater
- Humidity: needs high humidity, place in terrarium or use humidifier
- Nutrient addition: during the growth phase, fertilise every 4 weeks with organic liquid fertiliser. Fertilise every week with organic liquid fertiliser
- Repot, only when the soil is densely rooted (approx. 1x per year). Be careful not to damage the roots.
