dioecious member of the
Cucurbitaceae family
was given this name by Célestin Alfred Cogniaux in 1881. It was original found in
Ethiopia and Sudan, but now spread as a crop to Egypt and Eritrea as well. It is growing in a
rich soil with some water to lots of and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to
eight centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to five metres in height. The flowers are yellow.
The genera name from Latin coccineus,
meaning 'red' or 'scarlet' which must referee to the seeds. The specific name; abyssinica
derives from Latin and means 'of or from Ethiopia (Abyssinia). |
