Summary
Large buttressed tree, 25- 45 m. Leaves broadly ovate, 9-26 x 9-20 cm, acuminate, base cordate or truncate, margins dentate, upper surface ± glabrous, pubescent beneath; petioles 4-10 cm. Male flower: in lax panicles 15-20 cm; floral cup including sepals c.1.5 mm diameter; stamens exserted, filaments 4 mm. Female flowers; spike pendulous, 15-20 cm, flowers in whorls of 3-8, sessile, ellipsoid, 4 mm, including sepals; syles exserted, c 1mm, stigmas obliquely club-shaped. Capsule ovoid, 5-6 x 4-4.5 mm, ribbed.

    Family Description

    Large deciduous trees. Leaves alternate, simple, exstipulate. Dioecious; flowers appearing before leaves, in axillary panicles or pendulous spikes, actinomorphic, unisexual. Sepals 4, oblong, connate at base; petals absent. Male flowers saucer shaped; stamens 4; pistillode minute. Female flowers: ovary inferior, 1-celled, obovoid or ellipsoid, with parietal placentas bearing numerous ovules; styles 3, bifid, inserted on margin of ovary. Fruit a capsule.
