Spathulospora lanata Kohlm. 1973

Material examined (all specimens found in the algal collections) : 1-2. Herb. T. Levring (Göteborg) and Herb. FH "B. scoparia Harv., Banks Peninsula Novae Zelandiae, Dr. Berggren" (S. Berggren collected between 1873 and 1874 in New Zealand; T. Levring, pers. comm.), (Herb. J.K. 3049; Slides 1-16; Herb. J.K. 3052, Slides 1-7). 3. Herb. FH "Herbarium R. M. Laing, Christchurch, New Zealand, B. scoparia Hook. f. et Harv., Gore Bay, collected by Ruch (?) determined by Ruch (?)" (Name not legible), (Herb. J.K. 3053, Slides 1-11).

Thalli composed of radiating, dark brown cells. Ascocarps 230-370 µm high, 160-290 µm in diam, ovoidal, superficial, solitary or geminate, ostiolate, fuscous, leathery, subiculate, woolly. Walls 20-54 µm thick, two-layered; cells of the outer layer large, irregularly pyramidal, subglobose, truncate or ellipsoidal, brown, giving rise to the hairs; cells of the inner layer flattened, hyaline. Sterile hairs and long antheridia-bearing hairs enclosing the perithecium, curved, cylindrical, fuscous, 200-340 µm long, 13-14 µm in diam. at the base, 8-12 µm at the apex, 4-5 septate, thick-walled, immersed in the wall of the perithecium. Fertile hairs apically branching dichotomously and bearing more than 20 phialide-like antheridia. Antheridia lageniform, 16-25 µm long; venters ellipsoidal, 8-12.5 x 5-7.5 µm; necks obconical, or cylindrical, 10-12.5 x 2-2.5 µm. Subicula appressed to the host cells; without hyphae; assimilative cells hyaline, irregular, intracellular. Papillae short or lacking; ostioles periphysate. Paraphyses lacking. Asci circa 53 x 28 µm, 8 spored, clavate, thin-walled, early deliquescing. Ascospores 39-62 x 8-11.5 µm (including appendages), fusiform, straight or slightly curved, apically spathulate, one-celled, hyaline; below both ends covered with a lenticular appendage. Differing from S. phycophila by smaller ascospores, longer hairs and antheridial necks, larger ascocarps.

Substrate: Ballia scoparia (Rhodophyceae).

Pacific Ocean: New Zealand.

Thallis cellulis radiantibus, fuscis; ascocarpis 230-370 µm altis, 160-290 µm latis, ovoideis, superficialibus, solitariis vel geminatis, ostiolatis, fuscis, coreaceis, subiculatis, lanatis; muris 20-54 µm crassis; bistratosis; cellulis strati externi grandibus, irregulariter pyramidalibus, subglobosis, truncatis vel ellipsoideis, brunneis, villos formantibus; cellulis strati interns applanatis, hyalinis; villis sterilibus et longis villis antheridiiferis perithecium includentibus, curvatis, cylindricis, fuscis, 200-340 µm longis, basaliter 13-14 µm diam, apicaliter 8-12 µm diam, 4-5 septatis, pachydermaticis, in muris perithecii immersis; villis fertilibus apicaliter dichotome ramosis et plus quam 20 antheridios phialidiformibus ferentibus; antheridiis lageniformibus, 16-25 µm longis; ventribus ellipsoideis, 8-12.5 x 5-7.5 µm; collis obconicis vel cylindricis 10-12.5 x 2-2.5 µm; subiculis in cellulis hospitis appressis; sine hyphis; cellulis assimilantibus, hyalinis, irregularibus, intra cellularibus hospitis ; papillis brevibus vel absentibus, ostiolis periphysatis; paraphysibus absentibus; ascis circa 53 x 28 µm, octosporis, clavatis, leptodermis, mox deliquescentibus; ascosporis 39-62 x 8-11.5 µm (appendiculis inclusis), fusiformibus, rectis vel leniter curvatis, apicaliter spathulatis, unicellularibus, hyalinis; infra apices ambos appendiculis lenticularibus tectis. A S. phycophilam differt ascosporis minoribus, villis longioribus, collis antheridiiorum longioribus, ascocarpis majoribus.

Substratum: Ballia scoparia Harv. (Rhodophyceae). Distributio: Oceanus Pacificus: Nova Zelandia.

Etymology: lanata = woolly; covered with long, curled hairs, resembling wool; in reference to the lanate ascocarps.
HOLOTYPE: Herb. J.K. 3053, Slides 1-5 (FH) ; ISOTYPE: Herb. J.K. 3053, Slides. 6-11 (IMS) ; PARATYPES: Herb. J.K. 3049, Slides 1-2 (T. Levring), Slides 3-16 (IMS) ; Herb. J.K. 3052, Slide 1-2 (FH), Slides 3-7 (IMS).
