Unwrap symmetrical UV produces asymmetrical result

Unwrapping a symmetrical model seems to result in this asymmetrical mapping of the material/texture onto the model.

On the left, I have my unwrapped mesh, but on the right, I’m seeing a weird mapping pattern.

Am I missing something here?

Edit:

Additional note, I had to unwrap the head and the body separately (as in select head faces, unwrap, select body faces, unwrap, and then pack islands). If I select the whole mesh and select unwrap, the head unwrap produces an asymmetrical mesh.

You’re not missing anything. Unwrapping is not optimized to provide a symmetrical unwrap, it’s optimized to eliminate overlap and minimize distortion, and that means that it might not provide symmetrical unwrap.

If you want a symmetrical UV map, I would recommend using pinning and multiple unwraps. Select your midline, expand selection, unwrap. Then in UV editor, use scaling (and possibly rotation) to get your midline UVs straight. Then pin the midline UVs, select all, and unwrap around your straightened midline. If you have a symmetrical model, this should give you a symmetrical unwrap.

Ah I see, thanks for the explanation!
Multiple/separate unwraps and pinning were necessary to get the mesh to unwrap in a symmetrical fashion.
