Learning Bryophytes

The World offers us so much.  It is a pleasure to have the opportunity go out with my colleague Dave Wagner, Oregon’s top bryologist, to explore the woods of the Mount Pisgah Arboretum and learn a few mosses.  This last Saturday he led a trip for about 15 naturalists, myself included.  I was able to get this wonderful picture of one bryophyte with mature sporophytes, the reproductive part of the moss.  The light was just right to see the hairs of the peristome surrounding the end of the sporophyte.

My guess is that this is Homalothecium fulgens
