‘The Platform 2’ – Netflix Teases Upcoming Sequel with A Look at New Characters

The Platform 2

Galder Gaztelu-Irrutia’s The Platform delighted and grossed out Netflix audiences in 2020, making for the streaming service’s most popular Spanish film in Netflix history. Today, Netflix unveiled via Twitter that a sequel is much closer than anticipated with a set of new images.

The Platform is a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest,” Netflix’s description of the original film reads, and it indeed backs up that particular promise.

The film is set inside a vertical prison system, where inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Inmates on high floors eat better than those below, and one man tries to effect change so everyone gets enough. It makes for a thrilling and often gag-inducing horror satire.

While no plot details have been announced for The Platform 2 just yet, it’s a safe bet that it’ll go bigger and grosser than before.

Gaztelu-Irrutia returns to helm the sequel.

Based on the first look images, this sequel appears to center around new characters. Milena Smit, who also stars in Netflix’s upcoming release of Tin & Tina, and Hovik Keuchkerian (“The Night Manager”) star.

The sequel will be produced by Carlos Júarez, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, and Raquel Perea, from the Basque Films team.

Rafael reviewed The Platform for us at TIFF, raving in his 4.5-star write-up: “The Platform takes full advantage of its isolated setting and small cast to instead focus on a high concept, a tight script, and sharp dialogue that will make you laugh as often as it will make you think. This is a funny, heartfelt, at times disgusting, yet also thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that reminds of Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, but with way better food.”

The Platform also made Daniel Kurland’s Best International Horror Films of 2020 list, so don’t miss out.

Production has just begun on The Platform 2, so stay tuned for more details as they arrive. Until then, catch up with The Platform on Netflix now; maybe don’t go in with a full stomach.
