This 1951 Vincent Black Shadow is a Series C model that left the factory on February 2, 1951 and was sold new by Indian Sales of San Francisco, California. Power is provided by a 998cc V-twin, which features an integrated 4-speed gearbox and is paired with its matching upper frame member. A cosmetic refurbishment was performed by Mike White shortly before the seller’s father-in-law purchased the bike in 2001. A 2019 service performed by Vincent Club organizer Dave Molloy included reinstalling the stock suspension and a general tune-up. This Black Shadow is now being offered with a Vincent HRD Owner’s Club Certificate of Authenticity, the factory rims, Thornton suspension kit, a history file, tools and spares, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

1951 Vincent Series C Black Shadow

Late Vincent specialist and restorer Mike White performed a cosmetic refurbishment of this bike in the 1990s. Closeups of the black finish, gold pinstripes, tank transfers, alloy fenders, and Feridax saddle are provided in the gallery below.

A Thornton suspension system was installed when the seller inherited the bike. These components have been removed and the refreshed stock components were reinstalled. 19” front and 18” rear rims are laced to the factory hubs, allowing for more tire choices. Avon rubber is currently mounted, and the factory 20” and 19” rims are included.

The Smiths 150-mph speedometer measures 5″ in diameter, and the odometer shows just under 8,500 miles. Total mileage is unknown. Traditional Vincent flat handlebars remain installed, and closeups of the clutch, brake, compression release, carburetor, and ignition controls are provided in the gallery.

1951 Vincent Series C Black Shadow

The Black Shadow can be recognized by its black-painted engine cases. Output for 998cc V-twin was higher than that of the Rapide, which can be attributed to the increased compression ratio, larger ports, and a bigger set of Amal carburetors.

1951 Vincent Series C Black Shadow

A 1998 Certificate of Authenticity from the Vincent HRD Owner’s Club is included with the sale. Engine #F10AB/1B/5876 left paired with frame #7776B as shown on the factory completion sheet pictured in the gallery. Closeups of the matching engine case and upper frame member stampings are provided in the gallery below.

The included history file contains older service records, a photocopy of E.M.G Stevens’ Know Thy Beast, 1950s California license plates, and a detailed service invoice from the April 2019 service by Dave Molloy.
