Biography

College Success
  • Capped a tremendous Cal career by winning his first NCAA title as a senior in 2016, bringing home gold in the 400 IM to punctuate a standout four years in Berkeley.
  • Was one of the Bears' top scorers at the 2016 NCAA Championships, winning the 400 im and placing second in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Also helped the Bears take second in the 400 medley relay.
  • Owned Cal's top times in the 200 and 400 IM as well as the 200 breaststroke in 2016.
  • Made his final dual meet as a Bear a memorable one, setting pool records in the 200 IM and 200 breast at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.
  • Also used his senior season to train for a run at the 2016 Rio Olympics, swimming long course throughout the year to great success. He won the 200-meter IM at the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool and the 200 breast at the Arena Pro Series events in Austin, Texas and Orlando, Fla. 
  • Named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for December, 2015 after winning at the Duel in the Pool event and setting multiple national top times (at that point in the season) at the Georgia Invitational.
  • Enjoyed a hugely successful run at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships, winning gold in the 400 IM and taking silver in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Went on to compete in all three events at the NCAA Championships and placed third in the 200 IM, fourth in the 400 IM and won the consolation final in the 200 breaststroke.
  • As a sophomore was the repeat Pac-12 champion in the 400 IM.
  • At the 2014 NCAA Championships finished third in the 400 IM (3:38.58), setting a new school record, and was fifth in the 200 IM.
  • As a true freshman broke the Cal school record in the 400 IM (3:40.49), placing fourth at the NCAA championships.
  • Also ranks second all-time at Cal in the 200 IM with a best time of 1:41.79 (2015 Pac-12 Championships).
  • Was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year in 2013, capturing the conference title in the 400 IM
  • Placed fifth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 200 breast at the 2013 NCAA meet as well, scoring a total of 43 points

National Success

  • 2016 Rio Olympian earned his first Olympic medal by taking silver in the 200 breaststroke. 
  • Claimed the United States' first Olympic medal in the 200 breast since 2004.
  • Set an American record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.17 at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
  • Member of the U.S. National Team in the 200 breast and the 200 and 400 IM.
  • Brought home three medals from the 2015 World University Games in South Korea, winning gold in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke and claiming silver in the 400 IM. 
  • Placed fourth in the 200 breast at the 2014 Pan Pacifics and was third in the 400 IM and the 200 breast at the 2014 National Championships.
  • As a member of the National Junior Team, placed eighth in the 400 IM at the 2011 Summer Nationals and fourth in the 400 IM at the Junior World Championships in Peru.
